Assistant Professor of Operations Management
X.Y.'s research uses large-scale computational experiments and mathematical geometry to put humans back in the loop of automated, blackbox AI/optimization systems by building scientific understandings and productivity-enhancing tools. He co-discovered the now-widely-studied Neural Collapse phenomenon in deep neural network training and co-invented the Survey Descent method for nonsmooth optimization. For these works, he received the听听and was a finalist for the听. His past and present collaborators include the Frick Art Reference Library in NYC, the Surgical Data Science Collective, and the Veolia North America utilities company.
X.Y. holds a PhD in Operations Research and Information Engineering from Cornell University, an M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University, and a B.S.E. in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University.
