Shortell, MBA '70, PhD '72, Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health, will present a case for policy changes needed to ensure health systems can provide continuously improving and sustainable care. He will be joined by moderator Kenneth Kaufman, '76, Founder and Managing Director of Kaufman Hall, who has worked with hospital leaders nationwide as they navigate an evolving landscape of healthcare delivery, finance, and policy.

With more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, 18 books, and numerous national awards between them, Dr. Shortell and Mr. Kaufman will offer unique insights into the forces shaping healthcare and a vision for what is needed. Kenneth Kaufman (Moderator) '76

Kenneth Kaufman is Managing Director and Founder of Kaufman Hall, a Vizient company. Since 1976, Mr. Kaufman has provided healthcare organizations with expert counsel and guidance in areas including strategy, finance, financial and capital planning, and mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships. Clients include community hospitals and health systems, academic medical centers, and regional or national health systems.


Recognized as a leading authority on healthcare industry change, Mr. Kaufman has given more than 600 presentations to hospital and healthcare professional associations, board and executive groups, and other organizations. Mr. Kaufman also has authored or coauthored eight books, most recently authoring Now, Near, and Far: The Kaufman Blogs, 2016- 2024. In addition, he's often quoted and his articles regularly appear in major healthcare publications.
Mr. Kaufman is the recipient of the 2019 Richard L. Clarke Board of Directors Award from the Healthcare Financial Management Association for lifetime contribution to healthcare. In 2024, he received the American Hospital Association's Award of Honor, which is given to individuals or organizations in recognition of exemplary contributions to the health and well-being of our nation through leadership on major health policy or social initiatives. He is the only individual in the history of the healthcare industry to receive both of these awards.


Mr. Kaufman has an M.B.A. with a concentration in Hospital Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., M.P.H, MBA is the Blue Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management Emeritus, Dean Emeritus, and Professor of the Graduate School at the School of Public Health and Haas School of Business at University of California-Berkeley. He served as Dean of the School of Public Health from 2002-2013 and he is the Founding Director of the Center for Healthcare Organizational and Innovation Research (CHOIR) and Co Founding-Director of the Center for Lean Engagement and Research (CLEAR) in healthcare.

The author or co-author of nearly 400 peer-reviewed articles and 10 books Dr. Shortell and his colleagues have received numerous awards for their research including the Baxter/Allegiance/Graham Prize for Innovative Contributions to Health Services Research, the Gold Medal Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) the Distinguished Scholar Award from Academy Health and the AHA/HRET TRUST Visionary Leadership Award among others. He was recently elected into the Modern Healthcare Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the Welch-Rose award for distinguished service to Academic Public Health. His research examines the formation and performance of integrated delivery systems; the organizational factors associated with quality and outcomes of care; and the factors that influence the adoption of evidence-based processes for treating patients with chronic illness. He is currently conducting research on value-based healthcare delivery models, and on Lean management applications in healthcare. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and serves as an adviser to many organizations committed to improving health and healthcare in the United States.

He received his PhD in the Behavioral Sciences from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1972 and was Assistant Professor and Acting Direcor of the Program in Hospital Administration from 1972-1974.
